Curb Marker Program

KEEP IT CLEAN ... DRAINS TO STREAM

What is storm drain marking and why is it necessary?
Many people mistakenly believe that drain inlets empty to water treatment facilities, so they pour chemicals or sweep debris directly into storm drains.  Dumping the debris greatly increases the level of non-point source pollutants (leaves, soil, litter, fertilizers, pesticides, street residues) already present in urban stormwater runoff and can contribute substantially to a decline in water quality.

Our Program
Developed in June 2001, the storm drain curb marker program is to educate the public about non-point source pollution.  The City seeks volunteers to apply a curb marker that reads, "NO DUMPING ... DRAINS TO CHATTAHOOCHEE" on catch basins and distribute door hangers shaped like fish to all homes in area subdivisions.  Door hangers provide information about non-point source pollution and how they can help.

Policies are being developed that will require all new developments within the City of Austell to carry the "NO DUMPING ... DRAINS TO CHATTAHOOCHEE" cast into it.

Ordinances
Section 5-74(a) of the Code of Ordinances state that "it is unlawful for any person to throw, drain, run, or otherwise discharge to any component of the municipal separate storm sewer system (meaning storm drains) or to cause, permit or suffer to be thrown, drained, run, or allow to seep or otherwise charge into such system all matter of any nature excepting only such storm or surface water as herein authorized."

Volunteers are welcome!
