Job Summary

Performs technical level work inbox the enforcement of statutes, law and Ordinances, protecting life and property.  Work is performed according to establishes Departmental policies and procedures.  A substantial element of personal risk is involved and an employee must therefore be able to exercise sound judgment independently in emergency situations.  General instructions are received from a superior, who review work methods and results through reports, personal inspection, and discussion.  Supervision over other employees is not expected.

1.

Patrols City maintaining law and order.
 

 

 
 

2.

Issues citations and/or warnings to traffic violators.
 

 

 
 

3.

Responds to calls for assistance relayed by the 911 Communications dispatcher.
 

 

 
 

4.

Brings order to domestic disputes and assists in calming citizens or solving problems.
 

 

 
 

5.

Arrests violators of the law.
 

 

 
 

6.

Assists stranded motorists and other citizens in distress.
 

 

 
 

7.

Conducts preliminary investigations into crimes, gathers evidence, and obtains witnesses.
 

 

 
 

8.

Incarcerates prisoners until bail can be met or until day of court.
 

 

 
 

9.

Completes various reports.
 

 

 
 

10.

Conducts presentations at schools and civic group meetings.
 

 

 
 

11.

Maintains order in crowds and public gatherings.
 

 

 
 

12.

Provides court testimony to corroborate charges.
 

 

 
 

13.

Operates police radio to receive and transmit information.
 

 

 
 

14.

Performs other duties which may be assigned.
     

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the geography, population, and traffic patterns of the City.  Modern police science methods and procedures, basic law enforcement techniques, Georgia Constitutional law, criminal law and procedures, traffic law and enforcements, crisis intervention, and community relations.

Skills in the use of firearms, in self defense and in the apprehension of an individual.  Must have good written and oral communication skills.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, determine a proper course of action to be taken, remain calm in stressful situations, cope with others, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, assert physical force in subduing a suspect, learn police techniques and operate radio and radar equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Possession of a valid Georgia's drivers license.  Must be in physical condition to perform the duties of the job.  Must be able to withstand rigid background investigations.
